The Proposal
The Setting:
Ometepe, Nicaragua. At the base of a volcano in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. Two people madly in love. One with a birthday. The other with a plan...and a ring.
The Outcome:
We're engaged! As of July 17, 2005.
The Story:
Well, I can't really tell the whole story, considering that I was on the receiving end of the whole plan. But what I can tell you is that it was fantastic. While I was spending the summer in Nicaragua with Engineering World Health (www.ewh.org), Tommy came to visit "for my birthday."
We went to Ometepe, an island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua known for it's two volcanoes (one which became quite active right after we left). Nine of us EWH kids and Tommy rented an SUV with no power steering and explored the island on our own. I, of course, suspected nothing out of the ordinary and I actually had a pretty bad cold. But, we were all in high spirits.

At one of our first stops, we found ourselves at La Punta Jesus Maria. This is a point where the island juts out into Lake Nicaragua and comes to a very thin point. It is named after Jesus because when you are at the tip and you look out into the lake, it feels as if you are walking on water.
At this point, Tommy couldn't handle the suspense anymore. He told me that he wanted to give me my "birthday present" and walked me out to the point, right on the water. The EWH crew knew what was up and stayed back to give us space.
What followed was the most romantic 2 minutes (I actually have no idea how long it actually was). Tommy held my hand, and read me a beautiful poem. It was about 2/3 of the way through the poem that I realized that he might be proposing. But I still didn't really figure it out until he got down on one knee (see picture above). Well, the rest is pretty self-explanatory. He asked me to marry him and I said yes (I actually think I said, "Really?" first, and then said "Of course" but the whole experience is such a haze).
I feel like I didn't do this experience justice. It was so inexplicably perfect - impossible to put into words.
Bottom Line:
We're getting married!
